Professional Standards

REALTORS® pledge to follow the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) Code of Ethics, which sets them apart and ensures fairness, honesty, and integrity in every transaction. The North Bay Association of REALTORS® (NorBAR) is committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct in real estate. Our Professional Standards process helps protect clients, the public, and fellow REALTORS® by promoting accountability and ethical behavior.

What We Handle

We address three core areas through our Professional Standards Program:

  1. Ethics Complaints: Anyone – clients, customers, or fellow REALTORS® – may file a complaint if they believe a REALTOR® has violated the NAR Code of Ethics.
  2. Arbitration of Business Disputes: Commission or contractual disputes between REALTORS® or brokerages are resolved through arbitration, as required by Article 17 of the Code of Ethics.
  3. Informal Resolution Options: Before formal steps are taken, we may offer alternative solutions such as ombudsman outreach or ethics advocate assistance. In many cases, the C.A.R. Consumer and REALTOR® Ombudsman Hotline can help resolve issues.

What We Do Not Handle

How the Process Works

  • Ethics Complaints (Code of Ethics Violations): To be eligible for review through NorBAR, the REALTOR® must be a member of our Association. If you’re unsure of their membership, we’re happy to help confirm it.
  • Arbitration Requests (Commission/Contractual Disputes): To be eligible for arbitration through NorBAR, both parties (brokerages) must be members of our Association. If one party is from another Association, the CAR Interboard Arbitration process may apply.

How to Explore Filing a Complaint

Your inquiry is confidential. No information will be shared with the subject unless and until a formal complaint is filed. If you’re considering filing a disciplinary or arbitration complaint, please contact us first – do not complete or submit any forms beforehand. Please send an email to ceo@nba.realtor that includes:

  1. REALTOR®’s full name
  2. Their brokerage or company
  3. A brief summary of the issue or concern.
